Speak English like a local
Learn English slang. Seek out those catchy little contractions (for example: ‘gonna’), expressions (example: under the w
eather), and exclamations (example: over my dead body!), and make them second nature to you. Unless you plan to be an English teacher, learning English is about communicating comfortably, and slang is the mother of that cushy concept. Find the slang that is precisely suited to your personality, and let it roll off your tongue. —That’s how to learn English!
Watch movies in English. As difficult as this might be for you, go to the cinema a couple times a week and cram for the life exam. —This works even better if you can find films with subtitles in your native language. Bring popcorn.
English Sayings: Try to learn a new one as often as you can. When a friend pops out with some crazy nonsense about ‘two birds in the hand’—write it down! When a catchy little TV commercial gets stuck in your head—“Savour the Flavour”—milk it for all it’s worth! Get a diary and on every page commit to writing one short English saying or slogan, at the top, on the right hand corner. Use these sayings at every opportunity you can find, until you know how to wield them properly. —That’s how to learn English!
